“As a mother and artist living in contemporary society I have been slowly awakening to the esoteric realms of women’s culture, mythology and history. Archaeology and folklore hint at female centred communities at the root of the origins of civilisation, art and spirituality. We may catch a glimpse of this distant past if we learn to look beneath the surface, for the source of our oppression is surely the suppression of our collective power and beauty. Women’s bodies like the landscape, hold traces of our own personal stories, struggles and creations. Scars, stretch marks and signs of ageing are often considered to be imperfections, but they are the maps of our lives and should be celebrated. Much of my work seeks to explore these living issues, an excavation in search of women’s experience. This takes the form of a synthesis of land and body. As each new born experiences her mother's body as an environment, so I seek to reclaim and recall an ancient infancy of culture in collective memory, reminiscent of the drowned utopic civilisations of folklore and myth- Atlantis and Lyonesse.”
